Wilmington, Del. - On Friday, the Adelphi University women's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 2-0 loss to No. 23 Molloy University at the WU Athletics Complex on the campus of Wilmington University.
It was actually the first meeting between the local rivals since 2008, when Adelphi (0-1) and Molloy (1-0) hooked up as league opponents in the East Coast Conference.
Although Adelphi doubled up Molloy in shots, the Lions converted the only two opportunities to find the back of the net.
Of their 13 total shots, the Panthers put seven of them on targetÂ
Gia Mandile nearly tied the game at 1-1 before halftime, but her header off a
Kayla Mushorn diagonal was denied by Molloy keeper Shannon Kilian.
Mandile and
Victoria Colatosti each gave significant minutes off the bench in their Adelphi debuts and led all players in the match with two shots on goal apiece.
Colatosti tested Kilian with a left-footed shot early in the second half. On the ensuing counter, Molloy attacked the Adelphi defense and doubled its lead off a breakaway.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers are back in action Sunday (Aug. 26) on the road against Wilmington University at 2:30 p.m.
