Garden City, N.Y. - After narrowly falling to no. 17 Wayne State College, the Adelphi University volleyball program picked up its first win in 2022, a five-set thriller against the University of Bridgeport on Thursday.

Macarty McQueen put up double-digit kills in both efforts as the Panthers (1-1) were led by sophomore middle
Lilyen McCarthy in the second feature of the day with a new career-best 18 kills. Pacing the offense on day one of the 2022 campaign was
Brenna Valsted, who collected 73 assists and added two service aces alongside 13 digs.
Reigning Northeast-10 Libero of the Year chipped in 14 adn 29 digs, respectively and completed the afternoon with 10 assists of her own.
#17 Wayne State 3, Adelphi 0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-16)
- The Wildcats had three players record kills, and as a team hit nearly .300 in both the second and third sets.
- Adelphi's miscues happened in the form of 22 attack errors, with seven additional errors at the service line.
- A tight first set, the teams were tied at 23-all but a pair of wild attempts from the home team gave Wayne State the first set victory.
- The visitors out of Nebraska held an advantage in nearly every category, including an 8-4 mark in blocks.
- The Panthers couldn't hold more than a two-point lead in the second, ultimately letting a four-point stretch seal the deal for the Wildcats, en route to a three-set sweep as the home team trailed by at-most eight throughout the third.
Adelphi 3, Bridgeport 2 (25-16, 19-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-5)
- Adelphi went down 2-1 in the match after four of the last six points were earned by the Purple Knights in the third frame.
- The home team worked out to a 9-3 lead in the fourth en route to forcing a fifth set.
- Samantha Meehan helped her team from the service line as the home team opened the fifth with nine straight points before Bridgeport found the floor.
- McQueen was responsible for three kills as part of Adelphi's final six points.
- Adelphi edged Bridgeport 8-5 in total blocks with Samantha Collins chipping in five block assists and one solo stop.
- The Panthers also out-aced the Purple Knights 8-2 with four courtesy of Meehan.
The Panthers are back in action on Friday, August 26 when they host the University of Charleston and Post University in tri-match action. Due to on-campus conflicts, the squad will be at nearby Island Garden for an 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. starts.
