Baseball Stumbles Against Franklin Pierce in NCAA Opener, 6-4

Uniondale, N.Y. - Despite a go-ahead three-run homer from Anthony Cipri, the No. 3 seed Adelphi University baseball team fell 6-4 to sixth-seeded Franklin Pierce University in its opening game of the double-elimination NCAA Division II East Regional at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.

The Panthers (30-14-2) couldn't get much going against Franklin Pierce starter Kyle Roche until the fifth inning, when Cipri stepped to the plate with two on and two out.

After getting out to a 1-0 lead in the count, Cipri unloaded on a Roche offering and took it out to right for a three-run shot that gave the Brown and Gold the edge at 3-2.

Since May 6, Cipri possesses a team-leading .441 batting average with three home runs and a whopping 15 RBIs. That's only in a span of nine games.

With Nicolas Luc on the hill for Adelphi, the Ravens still tied the score in the sixth on a Charles Lebron homer and re-gained the lead in the seventh, off an Ian Battipaglia bases-clearing triple.

The Panthers twice brought the tying run to the plate in their half of the seventh, but only pushed across a run with a Cipri sacrifice fly to close the gap to 6-4.

Jordan Falco worked an impressive 2.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts, including a diving play on a bunt in the ninth that doubled off the runner at second with Falco throwing from the ground.

Adelphi will now play in an elimination game tomorrow (May 20) at 11 a.m. against No. 7 seed Le Moyne College, which suffered a 5-4 twelve-inning defeat against Molloy College in the first game of the day.
