Uniondale, N.Y. - On Friday, the third-seeded Adelphi University baseball team suffered a 5-1 defeat to No. 7 seed Le Moyne College in an elimination game of the 2022 NCAA Division II East Regional at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.
The loss closes out the 2022 campaign for the Panthers and
Bill Ianniciello's first year as head coach at 30-15-2 overall.
The first inning went awry defensively for Adelphi and it was all downhill from there.
A strike three of Le Moyne's Nick Nevins with two outs and the bases loaded went to the backstop and scored the game's opening run.
As
Jose Matos still attempted to get the out at first that would have ended the inning, the throw went down the right-field line and plated two more for the Dolphins.
Adelphi put two runners on in the first and fourth innings, but double plays stalled both threats.
While
Alec Maag got the Panthers on the board in the sixth with an RBI single, Le Moyne starter Max Parker only let up six hits in a complete-game effort.
John Rizzo struck out seven across six innings of work in his start for the Brown and Gold.
Tommy O'Sullivan worked two near-perfect frames to extend his scoreless streak to 8.1 innings.
