Easton, Mass. - In an epic battle of the best teams in the East, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team came up victorious to earn a trip back to the NCAA Division II Final Four for the first time since 2019, after defeating top-seeded Stonehill College, 13-11.
"Having people on the team that have been there before and lifting the other players up and showing them what its like to be in these big games is something really special," said senior defender
Alexandra Beebe.
After taking a two-goal lead in the second quarter on a
Kelly-Ann McGrath score, the Panthers use a three-goal clip throughout the third to stretch their advantage to make it that much harder for the hosting Skyhawks to overcome the deficit, despite their track record throughout both the conference and NCAA tournament.
The Skyhawks tallied three unanswered to kick off the fourth quarter, but
Emily Beier scored her fourth of the afternoon to make it a two-goal game. The home team managed to send one more past
Emma Lemanski, but
Izzy Grant notched the final goal of the afternoon on a pass from Beier to seal the deal at 13-11.
"Growing up, I would always come to Adelphi games to watch my older sister, so I've seen this culture and I just feel really grateful to be a part of it now, " commented Beier in the postgame press conference.
"Knowing that we've done it [won a National Championship] before definitely helps, but going forward its really about showing what we've got," said senior defender
Kailey Broderick.
Adelphi will head into the national semifinals as the no. 2 seed and face off against no. 3 University of Indianapolis on Friday, May 20 at 8:00 p.m. EST at host Lindenwood University.
