Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team advanced to the East Regional championship round on Friday afternoon after knocking off no. 5 Saint Anselm 2-1 in nine innings and no. 8 Pace 4-0.
East Region 1 Game 4: Adelphi 2, Saint Anselm 1 - 9 Innings
Adelphi (42-12) trailed from the first inning on after Saint Anselm (28-17) strung together a walk and two singles to take a 1-0.
The following six innings were a repeat of the Northeast-10 Championship game - a defensive battle. Both teams had three hits apiece through the top of the first inning.
With one out and runners on first and second,
Ashley Lombardi hit a sacrifice pop up that took the second baseman back into right field and allowed
Jaden Farhat to tag up and cross the plate and send the game into extra innings.
The game continued scoreless until
Brianna Pearson stepped to the plate and rocked a single into right center to send
Lauren O'Neill home from second to win the game.
Lindsey Hibbs replaced
Claire Fon in the third inning and took the win. She struck out just four batters and allowed one hit against 21 batters faced.
East Region 1 Game 5: Adelphi 4, Pace 0
Adelphi (43-12) went off for three runs off two hits in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead over Pace (28-21).
Jaden Farhat ripped a lead-off double to sit on second.
Ashley Lombardi and
Brianna Pearson walked back-to-back and Fahart scored on a passed ball when Pearson took first.
Courtney Wengryn drilled a single to center field that cleared the bases after a Pace error.
Pace left five runners on base - all of which were left stranded at first base.
Claire Fon handled the Setters in the re-match, only allowing three singles and striking out three.
Lindsey Hibbs came in to replace Fon and tossed the last two innings. The duo held the Setters to no runs scored.
No. 1 Adelphi will take on no. 4 Caldwell in the East 1 Region Championship tomorrow, May 14 at 11 a.m. The if necessary game is scheduled to follow at 1:30 p.m. as Caldwell enters the game undefeated and the tournament is double elimination.
