Baseball Falls Twice to End NE10 Tournament Run; 5-4, 10-9

Worcester, Mass. - The Adelphi University baseball team dropped a pair of games Friday to conclude its time at the 2022 NE10 Championship at Assumption's Rocheleau Field in Worcester.

The Panthers, who fell to 30-13-2 overall, are in line to receive an at-large bid to next week's NCAA Division II Championship. Adelphi was last slotted at No. 3 in the final East Region report on Wednesday.

Game 1: Adelphi 4, SNHU 5
The Panthers played the come-from-behind game once again, after a Cristian Mercedes RBI double in the third broke the ice in the winner's bracket contest.

In a familiar fashion, Adelphi rallied and jumped in front 4-1 in the sixth. Anthony Cipri, who was the hero yesterday, hit a game-tying RBI single in the fifth and followed with an RBI groundout in the next frame.

A couple of blunders in the sixth were responsible for giving the Panthers the lead. Johnny Catuosco, who went to third on a Cooper Johnson single, subsequently took off for home after SNHU's left-fielder misplayed the ball, plating the go-ahead run in the process.

The Penmen didn't go away though and Mercedes delivered another RBI double in the seventh that leveled the game at 4-4.

As Adelphi stranded a runner in scoring position in the eighth and ninth, SNHU's Sam Henrie walked it off with a two-out, two-strike, opposite-field RBI single in the Penmen's half of the ninth.

Andrew Williams threw a brilliant 5.2 innings with four strikeouts, while John Rizzo took the loss in relief, despite four strikeouts in three innings of work.

Game 2: Adelphi 9, Assumption 10
In an elimination game to decide who would face SNHU in the NE10 Championship, the Panthers clawed their way back from a 6-1 deficit.

The tide turned in the fifth, when Adelphi pushed across four runs to pull within 6-5. The Brown and Gold strung together four consecutive hits, with Cipri, Kyle Olson and Alec Maag all knocking in RBIs.

Assumption took a run back off the Adelphi bullpen in the sixth, but Maag doubled off the wall in the seventh and Catuosco followed that at-bat with a game-tying triple down the right-field line.

In Assumption's half of the eighth, Jared Berardino drilled a two-run homer inside the left-field foul pole that kept the Greyhounds ahead for good.

Jordan Falco started on the hill for Adelphi and earned a no-decision. All five pitchers recorded two strikeouts apiece on the bump for the Panthers.

The selection show for the 2022 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship will air this Sunday (May 15) at 10 p.m. on NCAA.com.
