Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team dropped its opening game of the NCAA East Region tournament to no. 8 Pace, 6-0
Pace opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. With one out, Zoie Iverson lined a double into the gap in left center field. She came around to score one batter later when Brittany Walkingstick poked a ball into right field, giving the setters a 1-0 lead.
Adelphi had an opportunity to strike back in the bottom of the frame after
Jaden Farhat and
Amanda Owens reached base. The threat was eliminated when Gisselle Garcia got
Ashley Lombardi to pop out to end the frame.
In the fourth, Pace doubled their lead when Walkingstick drove a single into right field allowing Pederson to come around to score.
The Settlers blew the game open in the sixth when Jeni Gordon's bases-clearing triple gave Pace a 5-0 lead. They added a sixth run when Gordon scored on a single by Carolina Iturriaga.
Adelphi struggled to get anything going offensively against Garcia, who pitched all seven innings, giving up just four hits while striking out four.
Lindsey Hibbs and
Claire Fon both pitched, but the start and loss went to Hibbs who is now 20-7 on the season.
Adelphi will now meet the loser of no. 4 Caldwell and no. 5 Saint Anselm tomorrow at noon in round one of the consolation bracket.
