Pleasantville, N.Y. - Through rainy conditions, the Adelphi men's lacrosse defense held off #10 Pace University on Wednesday for an 11-8 decision to remain undefeated in 2022.
Dylan Renner set a new career-high in saves in the victory with 15, as the Panther defense combined for 17 caused turnovers to the home teams' 10. Adelphi (8-0, 6-0 NE10) saw
Joseph Duchnowski tally his second consecutive hat trick as four others each chipped in two goals apiece.
Kyle Steinbach got things going for the visitors on Tuesday, capitalizing on a man-up possession to kick off a three-goal scoring run for Adelphi. The Setters (7-2, 3-2 NE10) did not score until their opponent had added a fourth goal, cutting the deficit to three, however Duchnowski netted his first to close out the opening quarter.
With a 5-1 lead after the first, the teams remained evenly matched throughout the second and third frames, each scoring twice in both quarters, allowing the Panthers to still lead by four, heading into the final 15 minutes of action.
The first goal of the fourth was courtesy of
Jason Rebaudo who assisted the next strike from
Angelo Caiazzo to extend Adelphi's lead to six. After the six minute mark, Rafael Rodriguez found a way past Renner, which swung momentum in favor of the Setters. The hosts went on to score their next two goals all within 90 seconds, picking up three key faceoff wins to help the cause.
Ryan Durnin chipped in a caused turnover to keep Pace out of their offensive zone down the stretch, as Renner came up big with a stop with under a minute to play to keep the home team at bay.
Durnin and
Nick Paris both caused three turnovers each as
Brian Hoerter went 12-for-23 at the faceoff X.
Adelphi returns home for a weekend of celebration when they take on Saint Mike's at 3:00 p.m. Prior to the contest, the DezyStrong Foundation will present its inaugural trophy to the student-athletes from men's and women's lacrosse who truly embody the spirit of Matt 'Dezy' Distefano.
