Albany, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team was named the 2022 Northeast-10 Regular Season Champions after a sweep at Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon, 6-3 and 2-0.
Game 1: Adelphi 6, Saint Rose 3
Alexa Sacripante went 2-for-4 in Game 1 with two RBI singles, including the first RBI of the game in the first inning.
Saint Rose (14-31, 10-16 NE10) responded the next frame by loading the bases with two outs.
Claire Fon battled to strikeout the batter at the plate to keep the score 1-0 heading into the second inning of play.
A costly error in the fourth inning by Saint Rose allowed the inning to continue.
Amanda Owens capitalized with a RBI double, adding to her four game hitting streak. Two more runs crossed the plate in the fourth for the Panthers (39-11, 22-4 NE10) with
Angela Lignelli's single and
Ashley Lombardi's double to put the visitors up 4-0.
Sacripante poke her second single of the day one in the top of the next frame and advanced
Ziara Shreter across the dish. Sacripante was replaced by
Courtney Murphy on the bases, and Murphy scored two batters later on
Jaden Farhat's RBI single.
Claire Fon started and lasted 3.2 innings inside the circle. She retired three batters and forced six ground outs before being replaced by
Lindsey Hibbs who earned her fifth save of the season.
Game 2: Adelphi 2, Saint Rose 0
Once again, Adelphi was the first team to score in Game 2 after two scoreless innings of play.
Courtney Wengryn doubled with one out and advanced to second on
Ziara Shreter's sacrifice bunt.
Alexa Sacripante reached on an error that scored Wengryn for a 1-0 lead.
Both teams went hitless for the next two complete innings until Wengryn singled in the fifth. Saint Rose had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the inning, but
Jaden Farhat,
Faith Camilleri and
Ashley Lombardi turned a 6-3-5 double play to get out of the inning.
Wengryn doubled again in the seventh, this time with runners on base, scoring
Ashley Lombardi who reached on a fielder's choice one batter earlier. Wengryn went a team best 3-for-4 on the game with her two doubles and single.
Claire Fon returned to the circle to start and take the win in Game 2, advancing to 21-4 on the season. She pitched the full seven innings and struck out seven batters and walked two.
The Panthers will return home to Garden City where they will host the Northeast-10 Championship series. They will take Janet L. Ficke Field again on Friday, May 6. Time and opponent are to be determined.
