Oceanside, N.Y. - The No. 3 seed Adelphi University men's tennis team comfortably coasted to a 4-0 win over sixth-seeded Bentley University in the first round of the 2022 NE10 Championship Tuesday at Point Set Racquet Club in Oceanside.
The Panthers (8-7) are set to advance to the semifinal round for the second time in as many years, and will meet No. 2 seed Southern New Hampshire University on Thursday (Apr. 28) in Manchester, N.H.
Earlier this year, Adelphi played its most tightly-contested match of the season at SNHUÂ -- a contest that saw the Penmen win by the slimmest of margins at 4-3.
Although the top pair of
Marko Jovanovic and
Gabriel Balestero trailed 6-5 in their match, the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams picked up the slack.
Pietro Sole and
Salomon Arce Lema won 6-4 in second doubles, while first-time doubles partners
Valentin Le Goupil-Maier and
Thiago Negrao were 7-5 victors at the No. 3 flight.
The top of Adelphi's singles lineup handled the rest. Jovanovic (6-1, 6-3), Balestero (6-1, 6-2) and
Adi Saginayev (6-4, 6-1) all won in straight sets to end it.
Adelphi is in search of its first win against SNHUÂ since Apr. 1, 2015, when the Panthers captured a 9-0 regular-season victory over the Penmen.
