Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team split with Pace University in Northeast-10 action on Saturday afternoon, 7-0 and 4-0.
Game 1: Adelphi 0, Pace 7
Adelphi (33-11, 18-4 NE10) struggled to get the bats going in Game 1 with only two hits through seven innings.
Pace (24-11, 12-7 NE10) built an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after the lead-off batter was hit by a pitch. The Panthers had an opportunity to tie the game the next frame, but were unable to push the two base runners across the plate.
The Setters added one run apiece in the third and fourth innings before an explosive four-run fifth inning sealed the deal.
Claire Fon earned the start and tossed 3.1 innings with four strikeouts.
Brianna Pearson came in for relief and pitched the remainder of the game and retired two batters in the act.
Game 2: Adelphi 4, Pace 0
Six of Adelphi's nine hits in Game 2 happened in the first inning of play, scoring all four runs of the contest.
The first three batters found a way to get on base, allowing
Jaden Farhat to knock in
Lauren O'Neill before the first out of the game.
Sophia Cicchetti kept the rally going with a two-run base-clearing double to right field for a 3-0 score.
Ashley Lombardi and
Amanda Owens followed Cicchetti with back-to-back singles to send one more run across for a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.
There were only three base runners between the Panthers and Setters from the bottom of the first to the top of the seventh when Adelphi had an opportunity to add to the lead.
With one out and runners on second and third, Sacripante put one on the ground to the shortstop that resulted in the lead runner being thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Lindsey Hibbs owned the circle in Game 2, retiring 13 batters and allowing just three hits. She now advances to 16-6 on the season.
The Panthers will return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 27 for a home doubleheader against Caldwell University. The first pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
