Baseball Rallies in Ninth to Defeat SCSU on Road, 5-4

New Haven, Conn. - On Wednesday, the Adelphi University baseball team won for the second time in as many days, pulling out a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Southern Connecticut State University in NE10 action at The Ballpark at SCSU.

The Panthers are now 3-1 this season against opponents who -- at the time -- appeared in the NCBWA National Top 25 Poll. Southern Connecticut earned votes in this week's rankings.

Adelphi (21-9-1, 11-4 NE10) has also played from behind in each of its last five conference games and holds a 4-1 record in that stretch.

These two teams will round out their regular-season series next Wednesday (Apr. 27) in New Haven at 3:30 p.m.

The Owls rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take the lead in the eighth, but the Panthers had their own comeback in store.

With one away in the ninth, Anthony Cipri singled to put the tying run on base. Matt Alifano then drove a 2-2 offering from SCSU closer Tommy Hughes down the left-field line for a game-tying RBI double.

As Alifano took third on the relay home, Kyle Olson -- on the first pitch he saw -- laid down a perfectly-executed squeeze bunt that stayed fair along the first-base line to score Alifano for the go-ahead run.

Alifano also drove in the game's first run in the third with a sacrifice fly and came home for the team's third run in the fifth on a throwing error that brought him around.

John Rizzo, who came out of the bullpen in the eighth, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth against the top of the SCSU order. None of the three balls that were put in play left the infield.

Nicolas Luc took the ball for the start and struck out three in six innings of work. The right-hander let up only two runs and one walk in his first start back from injury.

Head Coach Bill Ianniciello and his Adelphi squad are back in action Saturday (Apr. 23), when they begin a three-game weekend series against Assumption University with a doubleheader at noon in Worcester, Mass.
