Worcester, Mass. - Freshman pitcher
John Rizzo tossed a masterpiece that included 15 strikeouts Saturday in a 7-4 win over Assumption University at Rocheleau Field in Worcester.
Meanwhile,
Matt Alifano drove in all seven RBIs at the plate for the Panthers, who won their fifth in a row and improved to 22-9-1 on the year.
The seven RBIs tied Alifano's previous career-high last season against Southern Connecticut State on Mar. 27, 2021.
All of Alifano's seven RBIs came on two home runs. He laced two opposite-field shots -- the first of which was a three-run homer in the second and a grand slam in the fourth.
On the hill, Rizzo tossed 7.1 innings of one-hit ball and struck out the side in two separate frames. The righty also registered two strikeouts in each of the first five innings he threw.
Assumption broke through against the untouchable Rizzo in the eighth with a three-run homer and managed to cut the deficit to 7-4.
Jacob Pedersen worked a perfect 1.1 innings in relief to earn his first collegiate save.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers are back in action Tuesday (Apr. 26), when they head to Flushing, N.Y. for a 3 p.m. first pitch at Queens College.
