Garden City, N.Y. - Strong pitching performances by Claire Fon and Lindsey Hibbs helped the Adelphi University softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Bentley University, 5-0 and 2-1, for the team's tenth consecutive win on Saturday afternoon at Janet L. Fickle Field.
Game 1: Adelphi 5, Bentley 0
Claire Fon threw a complete game shutout and had plenty of run support as Adelphi (21-7, 8-0 NE10) took Game 1, 5-0.
After the teams traded zeros through the first two innings, Adelphi broke the deadlock in the bottom of the third. Angela Lignelli led off the frame with a single to left, advanced to second on Ashley Lombardi's sacrifice bunt, and went to third on Ziara Shreter's single up the middle. Both Lignelli and Shreter scored on Jaden Farhat's single to center to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
Adelphi added to the lead one inning later. The Panthers tallied five hits and three more runs in the frame. Lombardi, Shreter and Courtnery Wengryn each had an RBI in the inning to extend the score to 5-0.
Claire Fon allowed just three hits through seven dominant innings of work. She struck out five Falcon batters, while walking just one. This game marks her sixth shutout of the season.
Game 2: Adelphi 2, Bentley 1
Lindsey Hibbs threw a strong seven innings from the circle and Adelphi's offense did just enough to take Game 2 from Bentley, 2-1.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. With two outs in the inning, Jaden Farhat singled to left field and came around to score two batters later when Faith Camilleri dumped a RBI single into right field for a 1-0 lead in favor of the hosts.
Bentley did not have a baserunner through the first four innings against Hibbs, but tied the game at one in the fifth when Hannah Smith scored on an Adephi throwing error.
The Panthers regained the lead a half inning later when Jaden Farhat doubled to the gap in left center to bring Wengryn home to give Adelphi a 2-1 lead.
Hibbs shut the door on the Falcons over the final two innings, retiring all six hitters she faced in the sixth and seventh. She finished the game with 11 strikeouts, while only allowing three hits, one walk and one unearned run.
Adelphi returns to action Tuesday to host Felician University for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
