Softball Win Streak Snapped After Eighth-Inning Walk-Off Loss Against Assumption

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team's win streak came to an end after an eighth-inning walk-off home run for Assumption in Game 2.

The Greyhounds (7-18, 4-4 NE10) were the home team and the Panthers (22-8, 9-1 NE10) were the visitors for both games as a result of a site change.

Game 1: Adelphi 7, Assumption 2
The Adelphi bats rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to earn a 7-2 win over Assumption in Game 1.

Assumption opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after Mackenzie Bruggeman singled to right field, scoring two and giving the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead. Claire Fon was able to limit the damage as she got Samantha Hardwick to strike out with the bases loaded to end the frame.

The Panther's bats came to life in the top of the third. With runners on first and second, Courtney Wengryn sent a rocket into center field to bring Ashley Lombardi home, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Panthers took the lead two batters later when Alexa Sacripante hit a triple into right center allowing Ziara Shreter and Wengryn to cross the plate.

Adelphi extended the lead one inning later when Shreter sent a sacrifice fly to center field that was deep enough to allow Lauren O'Neill to score from third. One batter later, Wengryn picked up her third and fourth RBI's of the game as she sent a double to the left field corner bringing home Courtney Murphy and Sophia Cicchetti. Up next was Jaden Farhat who poked a single into center, bringing home Wengryn and giving the Panthers a 7-2 lead after the fourth inning.

After giving up the two runs in the first inning, Fon settled down and earned the win, tossing all seven innings while striking out seven. At one point, she retired 14 straight Greyhound hitters, and went over four straight innings without allowing a baserunner.

Game 2: Adelphi 3, Assumption 4 - 8 Innings
Alexa Sacripante stayed hot in Game 2. The Sophomore placed a double down the left field line to leadoff the second inning and crossed home safely one batter later off Faith Camilleri's RBI single.

The Brown and Gold capitalized on a pair of Greyhound errors for two runs in the top of the fifth. Jaden Farhat accounted for both tallies with a RBI double and heads-up base running, scoring on an overthrow to push the lead to 3-0.

Assumption was aggressive on the base path the next frame, responding to the deficit by converting an Adelphi error into a run on the board to cut the lead.

The Greyhounds continued their rally into the sixth. They strung together three hits and two runs to tie the game at 3-3.

Both teams exchanged zeros until the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs and two strikes against her, Summer Sheerin sent one to deep over center field fence to end the game in a walk-off.

Lindsey Hibbs started and pitched seven of the eight innings, and tallied 14 strikeouts, including five straight before Sheerin's homer.

The Panthers will travel to the University of New Haven on Tuesday, Apr. 12 for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
