Garden City, N.Y. - As the Panthers paid tribute to their lone graduating senior, the Adelphi University men's tennis team shut out Assumption University, 7-0, in NE10 action at the Adelphi Tennis Courts on Saturday.
In addition to honoring
Pietro Sole in a pre-game ceremony, Adelphi played its first home match on its own outdoor courts since Apr. 17, 2019.
The Panthers (6-6, 4-1 NE10) dominated from start to finish, beginning with a sweep of all three doubles matches.
Marko Jovanovic and
Gabriel Balestero broke serve for a 6-4 top-doubles victory. Sole and
Reece Farrow stayed unbeaten at the No. 2 flight with a 6-3 result.
Henrique Souza and
Adi Saginayev made their first doubles appearance of 2021-22 together and won a flawless 6-0 decision at No. 3 doubles.
In the same spotless fashion, Jovanovic and
Thomas Horsley won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 and No. 5 flights, respectively.
Balestero played another three-setter at No. 2 singles and prevailed 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 10-4.
Sole triumphed by a 6-4, 6-3 scoreline at third singles.
Valentin Le Goupil-Maier earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles.
Andrew Ray won 8-3 in an eight-game pro set at sixth singles.
Adelphi now takes to the road and faces NE10 foe Bentley University next Saturday (Apr. 9) at noon in Waltham, Mass.
