Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Toughs Out Two Wins to Earn Series Victory Against UNH; 7-5, 7-6

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team made some history Saturday, when it took the season series from University of New Haven with a sweep of a doubleheader at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City.

In Game 1, Michael Draskin belted his 10th homer of the year, making him the first Panther since Bill Melillo in 2007 to record double-digit home runs in a single season.

Then, in Game 2, Jacob Dannenberg fired a career- and team-season-high 12 strikeouts, which are the most in a game since All-American T.J. Santiago tallied 13 strikeouts in 2017.

Game 1: Adelphi 7, New Haven 5
Even with Adelphi jumping out to a 2-0 lead, New Haven staged a quick comeback with a four-run second.

It all turned around for the Panthers in their half of the fifth, when the hosts rallied from a 5-3 deficit.

After Kyle Olson earned a lead-off walk, Draskin took a 3-1 pitch out to left that leveled the game at 5-all. Once Draskin rounded the bases for a fourth time this series, Jack Ryan lifted a go-ahead solo blast to left-center in back-to-back fashion.

Draskin got another turn at the plate in the sixth and doubled down the third-base line to score Matt Alifano, who reached on an infield single to open the inning.

Kevin Glasser faced the minimum in the seventh and picked up his third save of 2022. Jacob Pedersen won his second decision with two strikeouts in five innings of work.

Game 2: Adelphi 7, New Haven 6
The Panthers were tasked with coming from behind once again. A Cooper Johnson third-inning double drove Jose Matos around from first and brought Adelphi within a run at 2-1.

In the fifth, Johnson's lead-off ground-rule double set the table for an inning that put the Panthers ahead for good. As the line-up turned over, Alifano homered to dead center, making it a 3-2 game.

Dannenberg preserved the lead on the hill. Ten of his first eighteen outs came via the strikeout, which carried through the sixth inning.

The Brown and Gold added pivotal insurance runs late. Alifano and Olson each plated a run in the seventh, while Johnson found the right-center field gap in the eighth for a pair of runs.

Although New Haven came within a run at 7-6 in the ninth, Nick Gavilla collected his first career save by inducing a game-ending flyout to center.

Head Coach Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers will play three games in as many days, starting Tuesday (Apr. 19) with a 3:30 p.m. home game against College of Staten Island.
