Garden City, N.Y. - In one of its hardest fought matches of the season, the Adelphi University women's tennis team fell 5-2 to Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Friday at the Adelphi Tennis Courts in Garden City.
The Panthers (10-6) started off by pulling the doubles point out from underneath STAC's feet.
After falling at No. 3 doubles, Adelphi's
Barbie Quagliardi and
Caterina Federici, and
Amanda Franstedt and
Louisa Junghanns both won by identical 6-3 scorelines to put the Panthers out to the early lead.
Then, in singles competition, the Brown and Gold won the first set from their opposition in five of the six matches.
Barbie Quagliardi first did away with her opposition at No. 2 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
However, STAC managed to push those other four contests the distance and squeezed out a victory in each.
Needing a tiebreaker to put her opponent away, Junghanns ultimately lost 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 2-6 at the top flight. Federici went down 6-2, 4-6, 1-6 in third singles.Â
Franstedt won her first set 6-0, but lost the next two, 2-6, 2-6, at No. 4 singles.
Julia Kielan fell 6-4, 3-6, 2-6 in her fifth-singles match.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas and her Adelphi squad are back in action Thursday (Apr. 21), when they meet Queens College for an 11 a.m. first serve in Flushing.
