Rockville Centre, N.Y. - In a cross-town, non-conference battle, the no. 4 Adelphi University men's lacrosse team used a five-goal third frame to come from behind to defeat Molloy College, 12-8 on Tuesday evening.
Kyle Steinbach finished the contest with a team-leading five points, behind four goals and one assist. Three others chipped in a couple of goals each, as
Joseph Duchnowski added two helpers to finish with four points.
The Lions (5-8) put up the first two goals of the contest despite earning possession on the opening three faceoffs of the contest.
Edward Perlstein and
Brian Hoerter split duties at the faceoff for the Panthers (10-0), combining to go 17-for-22 at the X. Down 2-0, Adelphi landed four shots on goal before finding the back of the cage, when Molloy-transfer
Jason Rebaudo connected with
Brian Harinski for their first goal of the game.
Steinbach evened the score before the opening quarter came to a close, but the Lions extended their lead by two with the next two tallies of the contest in the second.
Angelo Caiazzo sparked a a three-goal run for Adelphi, capped with a Duchnowski strike just before the buzzer to put the visitors up for the first time all game.
It was Rebaudo who scored the first goal coming out of the break, sending the Adelphi offense on a run that saw them pull ahead by four, to hold on to a lead they never relinquished.
Molloy scored its only goal of the quarter at 8:29 but the Brown and Gold added two more before time expired to double their opponents score, 10-5.
The home team managed to outscore the Panthers 3-2 in the final 15 minutes of action, but it was not enough to overcome, especially as
Eamon Hall added a man-up tally in the final minute of regulation.
Adelphi is back to Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday, when it hosts Franklin Pierce at 3:00 p.m. Prior to opening faceoff, the team will retire and honor several jersey numbers, and then recognize the 1981 National Championship team at halftime.
