Garden City, N.Y. - As its abbreviated spring season got underway on Sunday, the Adelphi University women's tennis team fell 5-2 to Wilmington University in non-conference action in Garden City.
Prior to first serve, the team celebrated
Barbie Quagliardi and her career accomplishments in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony.
Even despite falling in a 2-0 hole, the Panthers (10-5) rallied behind the efforts of
Louisa Junghanns and
Amanda Franstedt in singles competition.
Junghanns picked up from where she left off in the fall at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set victory.
Franstedt won her opening set in a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker and eventually triumphed in three sets, following a 10-7 outcome in the decisive set.
Adelphi would close the gap to 3-2, but Wilmington prevailed at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to seal it.
The Panthers continue their spring slate Friday (Apr. 15), when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3 p.m. in Garden City.
