New Haven, Conn. - On Sunday, the Adelphi University baseball team fell in both games against NE10 rival Southern Connecticut State University at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven.
The Panthers (16-7-1, 7-3 NE10)Â lost a tough 16-0 decision in the opener, before falling 4-1 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Adelphi 0, SCSU 16
After Adelphi was held off the scoreboard in its opening turn at-bat, SCSUÂ put up an astounding nine runs in the bottom of the first.
In what was a seven-inning contest, the Owls led 11-0 through three innings of play.
SCSU starter Steve Phillips four-hit the Panthers over six innings of work and Patrick Webler hurled a scoreless seventh.
Five different pitchers appeared for Adelphi, headlined by junior pitcher
Michael Storms.
Gavin Graff struck out the side in his inning of relief.
Game 2: Adelphi 1, SCSU 4
The Panthers took the early lead on a
Jose Matos RBI single in their first plate appearance.
However, the Owls responded with a three-run first and never looked back. Each of the three runs were unearned, as Adelphi committed three errors in the inning.
The Brown and Gold only managed to put a runner in scoring position twice the rest of the way.
Jack Wishner was the stranded runner both times.
John Rizzo made the start and went the full six innings. He allowed only one earned run, walked two and struck out four in the effort.
