Garden City, N.Y. - After clearing Motamed Field, the no. 9 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team went to work against no. 12 Mercy College, en route to an 11-6 victory on Wednesday afternoon.
Adelphi (2-0) held the Mavericks (1-1) scoreless through the third frame after taking a 5-2 lead at the half, which only added to their all time 35-10 advantage in their last two outings.
It took a while for both teams to get going, as nearly ten minutes expired from the first half before Mercy got on the board at 5:45, courtesy of Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk. It was
Tamia Lawson who found
Izzy Grant for the Panthers first strike on Motamed Field for the season, which sparked an 8-1 run in favor of the hosts over the ensuing 32 minutes of action.
The second quarter was quiet, with several turnovers on both sides as Adelphi outscored their opponents 2-1.
Christina McCabe scored in a man-down possession to kick off the scoring for the third frame, as the other side could not muster up any momentum, as
Alexandra Beebe,
Kailey Broderick and Lily Kolodinsky all caused turnovers over the next 15 minutes.
Mercy took advantage of two free position attempts to cut into their deficit, but the lead was too large to overcome as the Panthers padded their side of the scoreboard with three more goals. The Mavericks only outscored the home team in the last quarter, 4-3.
Kasey Flavin caused a team-leading three turnovers on defense as
Emma Lemanski picked up nine saves in goal for her second win of the season.
McCabe tallied a team-high five points as
Izzy Grant and
Danielle Marino each concluded the contest with a hat trick.
The team is back in action this weekend for a rematch of the 2019 National Championship game on Saturday, Mar. 12 when Adelphi heads to no. 5 West Chester.
