Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

DOWN GOES #1 - Women's Lacrosse Locks Up Thriller Over #1 UIndy, 7-5

Garden City, N.Y. - Seventeen caused turnovers proved to be the difference for no. 8 Adelphi women's lacrosse on Wednesday evening, as they took down the no. 1 team in NCAA Division II, University of Indianapolis in the programs first-ever meeting by a final 7-5 decision.

The Greyhounds, who were coming off a huge Sunday win over then no. 1 Le Moyne, held a commanding advantage in draw control wins (12-4) but were stopped several times by the Panther defense or Adelphi netminder, Emma Lemanski

The game's opening goal came less than four minutes into action, when Indianapolis's Jess Soenen found the back of the net following a crease violation in Adelphi's offensive end. Kerrin Heuser scored first for the home team about two minutes later as Kristina Schweitzer buried a shot to give the Panthers their first lead of the contest.

Indy added another goal to cut the deficit and bring it even again, but Kelly-Ann McGrath notched her second goal of the season to regain the advantage at the break. Even play throughout the second saw the hosts still maintaining a one-goal edge heading into halftime.

Schweitzer's hat trick goal was the lone tally of the third quarter, capitalizing on a man-up possession - a frame in which the Greyhounds committed six turnovers but picked up two saves in goal courtesy of second half goalkeeper Cassidy King.

With 13 minutes left in regulation, Indianapolis came within one again, but it was Gianna Bifulco's laser free-position shot at 6:09 that clinched the win for the Panthers. Three of Lemanski's six saves came in the ensuing minutes, keeping the Greyhounds off the board to seal the deal.

Adelphi will ride their three-game win streak into Saturday's Northeast-10 Conference matchup with Southern New Hampshire University. Opening draw is set for 1:00 p.m. at Motamed Field. The team will be collecting donations and selling t-shirts at the door for Mitchondrial Disease Awareness, in support of its Friends of Jaclyn teammate Lexi.
