Garden City, N.Y. - A mid-week non-conference tune-up saw the Adelphi University baseball team come out on top against Mercy College, 9-2, on Tuesday at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City.
Matt Alifano continued his torrid start for the Panthers (3-2), driving in five RBIs and scoring twice in the effort.
He also set the tone for much of the offense that was produced. Alifano drove an opposite-field double to right in the game's first at-bat and later scored the first run on a
Tim Feliz RBI groundout.
An inning later, Alifano came through with a two-out, two-RBI double to left that scored
Jose Matos and
Cooper Johnson.
In the fifth, the third baseman produced two more runs with his third two-bagger of the afternoon, before scoring on a
Kyle Olson RBI single in the next at-bat.
Andrew Williams made his 2022 debut on the bump and was spectacular, tossing six scoreless innings with four strikeouts. He never walked a batter and retired the side in order in three of his six frames of work.
Steven Murphy and
Max Steele both worked a scoreless inning in their first appearances of the season.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and his Adelphi squad return to action Friday (Mar. 11), when they open a four-game series with University of Bridgeport, starting with a doubleheader in Garden City at noon.
