Garden City, N.Y. - Before enjoying a weekend off, the Adelphi University baseball team swept a doubleheader from the University of Bridgeport by the scores of 11-2 and 10-0 on Friday at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City.
Game 1: Adelphi 11, Bridgeport 2
Once
Nicolas Luc retired the side in order to start the game, the Panther bats went to work in their first turn at the plate.
After a lead-off walk was issued to
Matt Alifano,
Kyle Olson drove him in for the game's first run on a first-pitch RBI double to center. One batter later,
Tim Feliz drove a 3-2 pitch out of sight that padded the Adelphi lead. It was Feliz's first homer at home since Mar. 11, 2021.
At one point, Luc retired five of eight batters via strikeout, until he ran into trouble in the top of the seventh. He put the first two on to face him and left it to
Jordan Falco to pick him up in relief.
A pickoff with one out at second base would limit the Purple Knights to only one run in the inning. The following frame, Adelphi got more timely defense, as Feliz gunned down a run at the plate, which kept the score at 5-2.
Those key plays eventually translated to a six-run eighth that put the game out of reach. The Panthers strung together three straight singles, with the inning being capped off by a two-run homer from
Cooper Johnson.
Seven of the nine starters in the Adelphi lineup collected two or more hits in the opener. Luc struck out seven batters across his six innings of work.
Game 2: Adelphi 10, Bridgeport 0
Michael Storms made his first collegiate start for the Panthers and cruised for five innings. The converted closer recorded five of his first six outs via strikeout and finished the afternoon with a career-high nine punchouts.
Alifano was the tablesetter atop the Adelphi lineup once again. He led off the game with an infield single, stole second and came around to score on a
Michael Draskin double that just narrowly missed clearing the fence.
Olson stayed hot with an RBI single in the second that made it 3-0, but the Panthers soon broke it open with a four-run fourth.
Olson, Feliz and Draskin all roped doubles to start the inning, while
Jose Matos singled in a run and
Jack Wishner drove in another on a fielder's choice.
Nick Gavilla came in as a pinch-hitter in the sixth and delivered his first RBI of the season with a single that plated
Alex Rende.
Steven Murphy and
Jacob Dannenberg both made a relief appearance and each worked a scoreless inning.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers wrap up their three-game series with Bridgeport on Monday (Mar. 14) at 3 p.m. in Bridgeport, Conn.
