Oceanside, N.Y. - As it resumed a three-match homestand to open its spring schedule on Saturday, the Adelphi University men's tennis team lost 5-2 to Saint Thomas Aquinas College in non-conference action at Point Set Racquet Club in Oceanside.
The Spartans (6-1) came into today's match as the reigning ECC Championship runner-up and were projected to finish second in the ECC preseason rankings.
An exciting 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker that favored the No. 2 doubles team of
Pietro Sole and
Salomon Arce Lema sent Adelphi (2-2) to the early 1-0 lead.
While the Panthers claimed the doubles point, the Spartans prevailed in five of the six singles matches.
Marko Jovanovic won his opening set (6-0) at the No. 1 flight in flawless fashion, and although the match needed the distance, he pulled out a 7-5 victory in the third set.
Thiago Negrao took the first set off his opponent in a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker at No. 6 singles, but lost the next two by 6-3 and 7-5 scorelines.

Rebecca Fakas and her Adelphi squad return to action Tuesday (Mar. 8), when they host Edinboro University of Pennsylvania at 1 p.m. at Point Set Racquet Club.
