Baseball Drops Wild 10-9 Game at Molloy

Uniondale, N.Y. - In a game where the two teams combined for nineteen runs, the Adelphi University baseball team fell in walk-off fashion to Molloy College, 10-9, on Saturday at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.

The Panthers (2-1), who trailed for much of the game, rallied for the lead in their final turn at-bat.

After Matt Alifano led off the ninth with a walk, the floodgates opened for Molloy pitcher Brian Morrisey, who surrendered three consecutive singles, including a game-tying RBI single by Tim Feliz that leveled the score at 6-6.

The subsequent pitching change didn't seem to faze Adelphi. Jack Ryan drew a walk with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run, while Anthony Cipri and pinch-hitter Alex Rende lifted sacrifice flies out to right that put the Panthers up 9-6.

Only needing three outs to close it out, Michael Storms allowed the first two batters to reach, before a Chris Peralta three-run homer brought the Lions back to even.

Adelphi went to the well twice in the bottom of the ninth and ultimately brought about a Matt Alifano fielding error, with the infield drawn in and the bases loaded, that allowed pinch-runner Vincent Pecora to score the game-winning run on a Peter Theodorellis grounder.

Both teams came through at the plate when runners were in scoring position. Adelphi hit 7-for-12 (.583) and Molloy batted 7-for-16 (.438).

The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead, but trailed in six of the nine innings, following a three-run third-inning homer by Molloy's Matt Overton..

Nicolas Luc made the start on the mound for Adelphi. He walked two and struck out five in five innings of work. Storms fanned three across his three innings of relief.

Head Coach Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers will meet the Lions again on Sunday (Mar. 6). this time for a single game at the originally-scheduled time of 1 p.m. in Garden City.
