West Haven, Conn. - With a five goal advantage in both the first and third quarters, the no. 3 Adelphi University women's lacrosse program took down no. 18 New Haven, 19-6, in a battle of undefeated teams on Tuesday evening.
As season ago, the regular season story played out different with the Chargers (4-1, 1-1 NE10), as the team from Connecticut scored two late in the game for a one-goal victory. Adelphi later avenged that loss to hand New Haven their final loss of the regular season in 2021, 18-6.
Three different players each scored four goals apiece -
Gianna Bifulco,
Christina McCabe and
Kerrin Heuser - as six others also found the back of the cage.
Izzy Grant matched New Haven's Gianna Capriola with eight draw control wins with the Panthers holding the advantage 18-11 for the contest.
It was an all-Adelphi opening quarter as they opened the contest with six straight before the home team got on the board in the final minute. Heuser got things going for the Panthers (5-0, 2-0 NE10) and
Emily Beier capped the scoring in the first to hold a 6-1 lead heading into the second.
New Haven scored three times on five shots in the second frame, but with Adelphi taking 12 shots through 15 minutes, the road team tacked on another five before the horn sounded for halftime.
Kristina Schweitzer, who netted a hat trick in last week's topple of the no. 1 team Indianapolis, scored the first tally of the third quarter, en route to five unanswered for the Panthers as they managed to hold their opponent scoreless through 15 minutes.
Emma Lemanski stopped all four shots that New Haven took to keep them off the board.
The Brown and Gold opened the last quarter with two consecutive from Bifulco, the second courtesy of a pass from
Giovanna Zapparrata, with just under 10 minutes left in regulation.
Kelly-Ann McGrath scored the final goal of the night for Adelphi, just before New Haven put two past
Madison Marchetta in goal - but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Adelphi will remain on the road this weekend when they take on no. 19 Assumption University on Saturday, Mar. 26. Game time is set for noon at Brian Kelly Stadium.
