Garden City, N.Y. - On Monday, the Adelphi University baseball team went yard four times in a stunning 16-4 win over No. 11 Southern New Hampshire University, wrapping up a three-game series with the Penmen at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City.
It was the team's first four-homer game since last season, when the Panthers (7-4) took AIC deep four times in the second game of a doubleheader on May 1, 2021.
In total, Adelphi scattered 20 hits on the afternoon and seven different players (six in the starting lineup) drove in runs.
Despite allowing the game's first run on a sac fly, the Panthers answered right back.
After
Matt Alifano earned a lead-off walk,
Kyle Olson found a gap for a game-tying RBI double. One batter later,
Michael Draskin lifted a big fly out to left-center, making it a 3-1 game after an inning of play.
That initial lead was short-lived though, as SNHU's Dylan O'Sullivan took Adelphi starter
Andrew Williams out to left in the top of the second, leveling things up at 3-all.
SNHU nearly had the lead back in the third, if not for some stellar defense.
Jose Matos threw out a basestealer in the second, while a soft grounder with one out resulted in a perfect relay home from first by Draskin to end the inning.
In turn, the Panthers turned that into runs in their half of the third.
Tim Feliz took the first offering out to right for a two-run homer, which gave Adelphi its two-run lead back at 5-3.
Williams performed his finest work in the fifth. Even with the bases loaded and none out, Williams induced a grounder that got the force at home for the first out. He then struck out Cristian Mercedes and got Sam Henrie to fly out to end the inning unscathed.
That opened the door to a seven-run fifth inning for Adelphi, in which the hosts sent 12 batters to the plate. Draskin homered for a second time in the frame. Alifano, Olson and Matos also added RBI base hits.
In the seventh,
Anthony Cipri, who only last year hit his first collegiate roundtripper, homered for the second time in as many days.
Johnny Catuosco drove in a pair with a shot up the middle.
Williams spent seven innings on the bump and struck out five.
Robert Affenita III finished it off in the ninth with a scoreless ninth, including a pair of strikeouts.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and his Adelphi squad continue their nine-game homestand Wednesday (Mar. 23), when they host Bloomsburg University in a non-conference tilt at 3:30 p.m. in Garden City.
