Garden City, N.Y. - After a tightly contested opening quarter, the no. 6 Adelphi University men's lacrosse team opened the scoring gates en route to a 16-6 season opening win over Georgian Court on Wednesday evening.
The Panthers (1-0) held the Lions (0-4) scoreless for nearly 23 minutes with no points for the visitors throughout the second quarter. The home team held a advantage in nearly every category, including a 30-14 mark for shots on goals.
With 13 players finding the back of the cage, Adelphi had another two who each tallied at least a point, as five different players finished the contest with three points each, including newcomer
Dylan Barry who notched a hat trick.
Scoring the first goal of the evening was Barry, off a pass from
James Hall after nearly two minutes went by in the opener. Georgian Court had a response however for the Panthers' next two goals, knotting the game at 3-all. It was
Eamon Hall's tally after
Sean McGovern found the back of the net that put the home team ahead for good, as the opening frame came to a close with a two-goal lead.
The second quarter was all Adelphi as
Jason Rebaudo and
Matt Greaves each scored for the first time in a Panther uniform. The Lions had difficulty landing shots on goal or even getting to their offensive zone as the hosts combined for six caused turnovers and netminder
Dylan Renner picked up one save.
Hofstra transfer
Kyle Steinbach opened the third quarter with his first tally of the year, as the Panthers managed to add two more before Georgian Court found the back of the net, but trailed by eight at that point.
Michael Caiazzo and
Brian Harinski added tallies for the home team before the night was through - and the game went nearly to regulation without a penalty. With 3:46 left on the clock,
Thomas Galgano was sent to the pen, to which the Lions capitalized with a man up goal to close out the contest.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 5 on the road with a Northeast-10 Conference meeting with American International. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. in Springfield, Mass.
