Bridgeport, Conn. - Despite collecting nine hits on the afternoon, the Adelphi University baseball team lost a 2-1 game to University of Bridgeport at Seaside Park on Monday.
The game was initially set for a doubleheader this past Sunday, but inclement weather altered plans for the weekend.
Adelphi (5-3) had the early opportunities and while the visitors put a runner on third in the second and fourth innings, Bridgeport (4-8) got out of both frames unscathed.
In the last of the fourth, the Purple Knights put two on, after a pair of pitches never left the infield. With two outs,
Anthony Cipri made a throw wide of first that plated two unearned runs and staked Bridgeport to a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers put at least one runner in scoring position in six of the game's first eight innings and broke through in the seventh on a
Kyle Olson RBI groundout.
Then, in the eighth,
Cooper Johnson seemed to have driven in the game-tying run, but
Jose Matos was thrown out at home on a perfect strike from right field.
Adelphi was retired in order in the ninth by UB's Justin Hafele, who picked up the save.
Andrew Williams made the start for the Panthers and struck out a career-high seven batters. He only allowed two hits and walked one in six innings of work.
John Rizzo fanned a pair in two scoreless innings of relief.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and his Adelphi squad now commence a nine-game homestand, starting with a three-game weekend series (Mar. 19-20) against No. 14 Southern New Hampshire University in a re-match of the 2021 NE10 Championship final. A doubleheader will kick off the series on Saturday at noon at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
