Wingate, N.C. - The Adelphi University softball team recorded its first win of the 2022 season in a doubleheader split at Wingate on Saturday afternoon; 3-2, 2-1.
Game 1: Adelphi 3, Wingate 2
Ziara Shreter started the game with an outfield single and quickly found herself in scoring position on a throwing error. Alexa Sacirpante sent Shreter across the plate on a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.Â
The next two innings remained scoreless for both Adelphi (1-2) and Wingate (13-5) until
Sophia Cicchetti broke the silence in the top of the fourth with a triple ripped down
the right field line. Sacripante tallied another RBI on a sacrifice fly to send Cicchetti home for a 2-0 Panther lead.Â
Two innings later Sacripante knocked Cicchetti again to up the score to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.Â
Wingate converted four hits to two runs in the bottom of the inning to bring the game within one. The Panthers retired three in a row in the seventh to end the game at 3-2.Â
Lindsey Hibbs secured her first win inside the circle and threw five strikeouts in the act.Â
Game 2: Adelphi 0, Wingate 1
Adelphi had two hits in the first inning that resulted in two runners left on base. The two hits by
Alexa Sacripante and
Faith Camilleri were the only ones by either team until
Jaden Farhat's left field single in the fifth inning.Â
Claire Fon went to work in the circle for Adelphi with 10 strikeouts, no walks, and gave up just two hits over six innings. Those hits were the only ones that Wingate had in Game 2, but were enough to produce the lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Both teams committed one fielding error and left runners on base. The Panthers left a total of four runners stranded to the Bulldogs two, and additionally outhit the Bulldogs 3-2 on the game.
The Panthers will travel to play Francis Marion University for a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, March 2.Â
