Men's Tennis Opens Spring Slate With 5-2 Win Over Dominican

Oceanside, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's tennis team shed the curtain on its Spring 2022 schedule Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 victory against Dominican College in non-conference action at Point Set Racquet Club.

After winning their first NE10 Tournament match last season since 2016, the Panthers are off to a solid 2-1 start to the 2021-22 campaign.

It was a clean sweep of doubles in their spring opener.

Although Marko Jovanovic and Gabriel Balestero prevailed in a hard-fought 7-5 match at top pairs, the doubles point had already been decided.

Pietro Sole and Salomon Arce Lema and Thiago Negrao and Thomas Horsley won by comfortable 6-3 and 6-1 decisions at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.

In his first Adelphi action, Adi Saginayev got Adelphi out to a strong start in singles with a 6-2, 6-0 straight-set victory at the No. 4 flight.

Jovanovic took the second set in a 9-7 tiebreak to complete a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) first-singles win. Luke Attride-Stirling (6-4, 6-2) and Valentin Le Goupil-Maier (6-2, 6-2) won in straight sets, as well.

Head Coach Rebecca Fakas and the Panthers return to action next Saturday (Mar. 5), when they welcome in Saint Thomas Aquinas College for a 3 p.m. first serve at Point Set Racquet Club.
