Garden City, N.Y. - In its penultimate contest of the regular season, the Adelphi University men's basketball team was out-rebounded and outscored by the University of New Haven, ultimately falling 74-62 on Saturday inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
The Panthers (17-9, 11-6), who started the week off leading the Southwest Division, dip to third in the standings after today's result, with one more game to play against Southern Connecticut. The Chargers (17-7,13-6 NE10) locked up their sixth consecutive win and sit just behind the division-leading Setters of Pace University who secured an overtime victory at AIC to finish the season with at-least a share of the regular season title.
The teams traded the lead throughout the opening half, neither taking more than a five-point edge over the other. Down the stretch, New Haven rattled off an 11-2 stretch which gave the visiting team a four-point advantage at the break. The Chargers were 5-for-8 from three point land in the first frame, compared to Adelphi 4-for-13 performance from beyond the arc.
Coming out of the break, the Chargers extended their lead to 14 just before the midway point, however Adelphi went on a 14-7 run, capped with a three-pointer from
Ronnie Silva to cut their deficit to single digits. The home team did not get any closer than six points, as the Panthers missed five of six shots from the field after the 3:21 mark.
Silva finished with a team-leading 25 points as
Adonis Williams accounted for 12 points and 10 boards for his fourth straight double-double.
Isaiah Salter also added 11 points. For New Haven, five different players scored in double-figures, including a team-best 19 from Tavin Pierre Philippe who was not in the starting five.
Prior to the contest, the department recognized the accomplishments of
Chris Coalmon, who was the lone member of the graduating class in attendance.
Adelphi will play its regular season finale on Tuesday, February 22 at Southern Connecticut. In honor of the date (2/22/22), the entire Division II membership will celebrate Division II Day.
