Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's basketball team lost its second straight contest on Wednesday, dropping a 69-57 decision to Pace University inside the Goldstein Fitness Center.
The victory for the Setters (16-8, 12-5 NE10) makes it a clean sweep over Adelphi (17-8, 11-6) in the regular season, with two more games still left to play - both teams are vying for the top spot in the Southwest Division.
The lead bounced between both teams for the opening 11 minutes of action until a three pointer from Christian Adams gave the home team the lead for the remainder of the half. The Panthers were held to just three trifectas in the opener as the Setters went on to knock down five, culminating in 47 percent shooting for the opening frame.
Adelphi, who was trailing by 12 at the half, found themselves down by 18 after the opening 2:10 in the second half, as Pace scored the first six points coming out of the break.
Chris Coalmon's layup at 17:26 sparked an 18-4 run that brought the game within four points. The visitors managed to keep the game within single digits over the next five minutes, but foul trouble and a quick pace down the stretch gave the home team the edge, as they closed out a 69-57 victory.
For Adelphi,
Ronnie Silva finished with a quiet 21 points, courtesy of five three-pointers and 4-for-5 shooting from the charity stripe.
Adonis Williams recorded his 11th - and third consecutive - double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Prior to Wednesday's tip, the NCAA released it's first installment of Division II regional rankings, which featured Adelphi at no. 3, behind top-ranked Bentley University and Saint Anselm College. To kick off the month of February, the Panthers knocked off then #19 Bentley by one point, after losing previously to the Hawks in January. The Setters appeared at no. 8, sitting above New Haven and St. Thomas Aquinas.
Men's basketball will return to the CRS for their regular season home finale on Saturday, Feb. 19. Prior to opening tip-off, the department will recognize the careers of
Chris Coalmon and
Jared Rivers for Senior Day.
