Garden City, N.Y. - In a matchup of the league's division leaders, the decision came down to the final seconds resulting in a win for Adelphi men's hoops, as they took down #18 Bentley University on Tuesday, 75-74.
The last time the Panthers took down a ranked opponent? A 92-82 over then no. 24 Bentley on January 23, 2019. It was the second game that month that Adelphi bested a team in the top-25, after previously taking down no. 9 Saint Anselm on Jan. 12, 2019.
Chris Coalmon took two free throws in the final second to seal the deal for the Panthers (14-6,9-4 NE10), knocking off the Falcons (14-3, 9-3 NE10) who entered Tuesday's contest on an eight-game win streak. The last time out, exactly two years to the day, Adelphi secured a two-point win and now hold an 11-7 advantage in the all-time record.
Adelphi's largest deficit came in the first half, when Bentley rattled off a 19-7 run to hold a commanding 15-point lead.
Ronnie Silva's step back three-pointer - one of eight for the contest - at 5:28 sparked a stretch of 14 unanswered points for the home team to bring it back even with just over a minute left in the first half.
Bentley's Jordan Mello-Klein knocked down back-to-back free throws that gave the Falcons the upper hand headed into the locker room, despite several attempts at the basket for the Panthers as time expired.
The visiting team managed to stay ahead of Adelphi for the opening nine minutes of the second half, until another three from Silva at 11:30, gave the hosts their first lead of the frame. The Falcons regained its position over three minutes later, with the teams trading the lead a few more times before regulation came to a close.
Down three with 23 seconds left on the scoreboard, Silva drove to the basket unbothered, which brought the Panthers within one. Drawing a foul, Colton Lawrence missed both shots at the charity stripe, returning possession to the home team. Coalmon took his chance at the hoop and drawing the foul, knocked down both with 1.8 left on the clock. Bentley threw up a hail mary shot at the buzzer which clanged off the rim, snapping the win streak for the Falcons.
Silva led all players with 33 points, as
Isaiah Salter and
Adonis Williams both chipped in 11 each.
Aristotelis Sotiriou rounded out the starters in double-digits, accounting for 10 on 4-of-9 shooting. Bentley outshot the Panthers 53-43 percent, and were a plus-ten on the boards, 38-28, but were plagued with 11 turnovers compared the hosts five.
For Adelphi, it was only the fourth game this season with single digit miscues, and lowest mark of the season.
Adelphi looks to extend its win streak to five when they take on non-conference Caldwell University on Thursday, Feb. 3. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. inside the George R. Newman Center. The Panthers will return to NE10 action next Tuesday, Feb. 8 as they host Le Moyne College.
