Garden City, N.Y. - Key turnovers cost the Adelphi University women's basketball team Tuesday night in a 56-47 loss to Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
Entering tonight's game, the Panthers (10-9, 8-6 NE10) were on a season-high six-game winning streak -- the fourth-longest for a head coach (
Sade Jackson) in his or her first year leading the team in the program's history.
Bentley (11-4, 9-2 NE10) opened the contest on a 9-0 run, which stood as the largest lead of the game until the last 33 seconds of regulation.
The home team chipped away in the opening quarter to bring the score within three (17-14), after
Emily Miccile knocked down a step-back three at the buzzer.Â
Adelphi limited the visitors to just eight points in the second quarter and forced seven turnovers, but trailed 25-20 at the half.Â
The Panthers came on strong out of the break, outscoring the Falcons, 15-13, to start the second half and brought the score within 30-29 at the 4:01 mark. Bentley answered with a three-pointer to keep the lead.Â
Adelphi's 13Â second-half turnovers were ultimately the deciding factor of the contest. The team lost seven possessions to turnovers across the final 10 minutes of play.Â
Emily Miccile and
Ty'zhea Hawkins ended with 13 and 12 points apiece, shooting a combined 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.Â
The Panthers will face American International College in an NE10 showdown on Thursday (Feb. 3) at 5:30 p.m. in Springfield, Mass.
