Women's Basketball Upsets No. 23 Bentley, 59-57

Waltham, Mass. - On Saturday, the Adelphi University women's basketball team took down No. 23 Bentley University by a 59-57 final in NE10 action at the Dana Center.

As the Panthers (4-4, 3-3 NE10) played their final conference game before the holiday break, Ty'zhea Hawkins sank the game-winning free throws with four seconds left.

Off an inbounds play, Hawkins drove baseline on a give-and-go and initiated contact at the rim that gave the point guard two crucial shots at the line.

With her team trailing 57-56, Hawkins hit the tying and go-ahead free throws. The next possession, Bentley drew up its winning play, but Ella Thompson threw an errant pass that ended the game.

For much of the contest, the lead by either team never grew by more than two possessions.

Adelphi committed only 10 turnovers across the forty minutes and converted 16 Bentley turnovers into 17 points.

The Panthers shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) from the field, which included a 57.1 percent clip in the first quarter and a 52.9 percent mark in the third.

Hawkins finished with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Jenna Jordan nearly had a double-double with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds.

Head Coach Sade Jackson and her Adelphi squad now come home for a 5:30 p.m. opening tip against Molloy University on Wednesday (Dec. 14) at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
