Waltham, Mass. - With an untimely foul at the buzzer of regulation, the Adelphi University men's basketball team saw its opportunity to defeat Bentley University slip away, resulting in a 75-72 final decision in its final conference matchup til the new year.
At 72-all, Adelphi (3-7, 0-6 NE10) had one more chance to seal the deal or send the game to overtime, but a three-point attempt from the home team at the buzzer was clipped by the defense of
Mason Jackson, which sent Bentley's Brian Wright-Kinsey to the line. After landing all three, the Panthers had .8 to get it down the floor and to the hoop, but time expired as an attempt fell short.
In a game of boards, the home team out-rebounded Adelphi 43-27, capitalizing with 11 second chance points.
Bentley worked its way out to a double-digit lead after the first nine minutes of action, reaching its largest lead of 15 with just 2:21 remaining in the first half. A three-pointer from
Justin Perez cut the advantage to single digits as the Panthers trailed by nine heading into the locker room.
A 12-3 run in favor of the Panthers saw the visitors even the contest at 42-42, when Jackson drove to the basket for an easy lay-in. A minute later, Adelphi took its second lead of the contest, and extended its advantage to five on a three-point basket from
Kunga Tsering. Bentley was not able to string anything together to regain the edge, as the visitors pushed out to its largest lead of eight on a jumper beyond the arc from
Elijah Lewis at 8:56.
Lewis led all players with 20 points and was followed by fellow rookies
Dayshaun Walton and
Mason Jackson who accounted for 17 and 14, respectively.
Back-to-back free throws for the Falcons tied the game with 25 seconds left on the clock, but Adelphi was unable to land a shot or force overtime, and suffered an unfortunate call at the buzzer, which saw Bentley take a 75-72 victory to extend its win-streak to six games.
Dave Duke and his squad will close out the 2022 portion of the conference schedule winless, with its next NE10 opponent kicking off the new year on Jan. 4. The team's next four opponents feature three teams out of the CACC and one from the ECC, starting with Goldey-Beacom on Monday, Dec. 12.
