Manchester, N.H. - Another 32-point night from
Ty'zhea Hawkins wasn't enough this time, as a comeback bid by the Adelphi University women's basketball team was foiled by Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday at Stan Spirou Field House.
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Panthers, who fell to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in NE10 competition.
Over her last three games, Hawkins -- the reigning NE10 Player of the Week -- is averaging 29.3 points per game on 61.4 percent shooting (35-of-57) from the field.
A poor first quarter from Adelphi resulted in the visitors falling into a 23-11 hole after the opening period of play.
The Panthers would make half of their shots the rest of the way and close the gap in the process.
A 9-0 run to open the second quarter got Adelphi within 25-20, and by the third quarter, the Brown and Gold had completed the comeback.
Adelphi trailed 47-38 midway through the third, until a 12-3 response -- keyed by Hawkins' game-tying and go-ahead buckets -- rallied the Panthers to a 51-50 lead with 2:02 left.
A missed
Kaitlyn O'Connell three on the visitors' next possession turned into a 9-0 SNHU run that put the Penmen back ahead for good.
Hawkins kept the Panthers in it for much of the fourth and a
Christina Sanchez three had the Panthers within a possession of re-tying the score in the final minutes.
Although Adelphi wouldn't go away, SNHU's Jenna Roche made four key free throws down the stretch that put the game away.
Head Coach
Sade Jackson and the Panthers now come home to host Southern Connecticut State University in their Morgan's Message game on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
