Garden City, N.Y. - A delicious appetizer leading into the Thanksgiving break, the Adelphi University women's basketball team held on for a 70-64 win over Le Moyne College in NE10 action at the Center for Recreation and Sport on Tuesday night.
With Adelphi (2-2, 2-1 NE10) trailing 52-50 midway through the fourth quarter,
Lauren Hammersley sank three crucial three-pointers down the stretch to stake the Panthers to a lead they would not relinquish.
Hammersley was coming off a 27-point outing in Adelphi's last game at Saint Anselm, where she buried seven treys and nearly tied the single-game program record in the process.
The Brown and Gold clung to a slight 61-60 edge in the final minutes, before
Ty'zhea Hawkins put a lid on the contest with back-to-back buckets inside the paint.
Hawkins and Hammersley combined for 45 of the squad's 70 points in the game. Hawkins had the game-high with 24 points, while Hammersley drained another six threes in a 21-point effort.
As the teams tipped off from the jump circle, the Panthers started 8-for-16 from the field and cruised to a six-point first-quarter lead at 20-14.
Adelphi shot an even 50.0 percent (16-of-32) from field-goal range in the opening 20 minutes and took a comfortable 38-29 advantage into halftime.
Rolanda Robinson led the Panthers on the glass with nine rebounds, in addition to her five points.
Sydney Rosenoff and
Jenna Jordan added four points and five rebounds apiece.
Adelphi will stay home for its next game on Sunday (Nov. 27) with a non-conference battle on tap against University of Bridgeport at 4:30 p.m. at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
