Men's Soccer Ousted from NE10 Semifinals on Kicks

Garden City, N.Y. - On Wednesday night, the No. 6 Adelphi University men's soccer team departed the pitch without the result it wanted in the shootout, in the semifinals of the 2022 NE10 Championship.

While the match went into the books as a scoreless tie, the Panthers and No. 7 seed Le Moyne College needed penalty kicks to determine the advancing team to the NE10 final.

Although Adelphi (8-4-6) had the initial 1-0 lead after the opening round of kicks, the Brown and Gold were unable to figure out Le Moyne keeper Josh Mahr, who stopped the next three in succession.

And while Daniel De La Heras kept Le Moyne's first try out of the net, the Dolphins converted on the next three to seal Adelphi's fate.

In an evenly-contested tussle, the Panthers and Dolphins were a near 50-50 split on possession across the full 110 minutes.

Adelphi got its taste of Mahr early, with Jesper Mikkelsen putting an early left-footed strike off the hands of the goalie in the first half.

De La Heras did quite a fine job himself between the pipes for the Panthers, stonewalling all five attempts on net by the visitors.

In his second postseason start in as many contests, Rory Duggan led all players with a game- and season-high four shots.

Head Coach Gary Book and his Adelphi squad will now await word on a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The selection show will air Monday (Nov. 7) at 6:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
