Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca had no intent of slowing down in his valiant return to the pitch.
The striker buried a penalty in the second half that accounted for the only goal of the match in the No. 10 seed Adelphi University men's soccer team's 1-0 win over No. 7 seed Queens College in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Division II Championship at the University of Charleston's Welch Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon.
In their first meeting since 2015, Adelphi (9-4-6) and Queens (13-7) were feeling each other out in the opening 45 minutes. A half that saw a combined seven shots.
With under thirty minutes to go in the second half,
Filippo Peri looked to play a shot towards the far post that struck the hand of a Queens defender and awarded Adelphi a penalty.
Descalzo took a running start from inside the 18 and hesitated before planting his shot into the right corner of the net.
Queens put six shots on goal to Adelphi's two in the final 30 minutes that followed Descalzo's goal, but
Daniel De La Heras stood tall in goal.
In the final minute, De La Heras made two sprawling saves on the doorstep to ward off the Knights from making a comeback.
The Panthers are tabbed to now play No. 2 seed Charleston, which appeared at No. 6 in the final United Soccer Coaches Top 25 regular-season rankings, at 3 p.m. on Saturday (Nov 12) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
