West Haven, Conn. - In its Northeast-10 Conference opener, the Adelphi University men's basketball team suffered a 64-82 loss to the University of New Haven Saturday afternoon, moving to 2-2 this season.
Leading the offense despite the defeat was
Ronnie Silva, who used 7-for-18 shooting to finish with 12 points.
Aristotelis Sotiriou put up another double-figure effort with 15 points.
New Haven (1-1,1-1 NE10) was foot on the gas from the start, shooting 69 percent from the field in the opening half, which included 13 three-pointers. The Panthers (3-2, 0-1 NE10) struggled to get any momentum going, despite opening threes from Silva and
Andrew Delaney. After 10 minutes of action, the home team led by 13, but a 10-point stretch for Adelphi saw them trailing by seven with with just over five minutes left.
It was the Chargers who closed out the opening half on a 10-4 scoring run to lead 46-32 at the break. For the home team, they put up 32 points alone in the paint, compared to Adelphi's four.
Coming out of the break, New Haven added nine more points to their side of the board before a Sotiriou layup broke up the stretch.
Jake Hlywiak netted a three-pointer at 13:37, however the Panthers still trailed by 20. Another stretch of shots from beyond the arc contributed to the team's 12 makes for the contest, but were not enough to overcome the deficit.
Dayshaun Walton scored six points and led the team in rebounds with nine.
The Panthers will resume action on Tuesday, Nov. 21 when they welcome Le Moyne College for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
