Deleva Scores Pair as Field Hockey Advances to Semis With 4-3 Win Over STAC

Garden City, N.Y - With both teams scoring back and forth throughout the contest, the Adelphi University field hockey team pulled off a  4-3 victory against St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday evening in the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals.

Dating back 13 days ago, these two NE10 conference teams met up, with the Cats coming way with the 3-1 win in their meeting.

The Spartans (10-9) made an impact on the offensive side right away in the first few minutes of the game. Shooting four times before connecting with one on the fifth attempt, Floortje Beune found the back of the cage off an assist by Jasmijn Van Drunen to give the visitors the early lead. STAC kept creating chances on the Panthers' side, which led to a penalty stroke for the Spartans to have a chance to break open the scoring. The penalty was saved by junior goalie Amanda Montiel and gave the Brown and Gold the push they needed.

Scoring twice in the last minute of the first period, Panthers' sophomore Amanda Lee scored the first and assisted on the second goal, finding graduate student Kaylee Deleva to give Adelphi the advantage.

As the second quarter began, the Spartans notched another goal, this time from Kelly Johnson to tie the game up at two each. Adelphi (11-8) responded quickly, capitalizing on a penalty corner setup and scoring off a rebound goal that trickled into the back of the cage by Emiline Biggin. to give the Cats three goals with plenty of time left in the second. Both teams shot for a combined 21 times in the first half while also creating ten penalty corners.

Coming out of the half, STAC was on the attack, accumulating five shots, however a key defensive save by Francesca Manzella prevented the Spartans from tying the game. The Brown and Gold scored their fourth goal of the game off a penalty corner that was struck in by Deleva, giving the home team the upper hand heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

Johnson recorded her second goal of the contest to bring the Spartans within one in the fourth quarter. Montiel  ended her day in the cage tallying up six saves and helping bring the Panthers one step closer to an NE10 Championship opportunity.

Adelphi will play in the NE10 Semifinals against top-seeded Saint Anselm, who they defeated earlier in the regular season by a 1-0 overtime game winner from Deleva.
