Manchester, NH - An unbelievable finish for the Adelphi University field hockey team as they upset No. 1 seeded Saint Anselm on the road by a score of 2-1 in double overtime, in the Northeast-10 Conference Semifinal on Friday evening.
The two teams faced off in the regular season in early October where the Panthers won in overtime by a 1-0 score where graduate student Kaylee Deleva scored and assisting on that was sophomore Amanda Lee.
For the first half of the game between both teams, they each exchanged chances on penalty corners but neither side could not find the back of the cage. At the 20:14 mark, the NE10 Player of the Year Maggie Malloy had a close shot that went just wide in the second quarter. It was an offensive struggle for each team as neither side scored.
As the second-half whistle blew, only three minutes in, the Hawks (14-6) put one into the back of the cage off a rebound shot that was scored by Amanda Lewandowski to give Saint Anselm the lead. The Hawks finished the third quarter unleashing six shots, going into the fourth period.
A pass from junior Kylie Peregoy that was about 35 feet long was sent into the Hawks' defensive zone and was tapped in by Deleva to tie the game up at one in the fourth quarter. The Brown and Gold had two more chances late in the last few minutes of regulation but were unsuccessful in the end - having the contest go into overtime.
The first overtime was quiet on both offensive sides. A couple of penalty corner opportunities for the Cats but none were successful in leading toward a game-winning goal as the contest would go into the second overtime period.
At the 72:03 mark, off a penalty corner that has brought much success to the Panthers' scoring this season, was notched in by Deleva who was assisted from Lee to bring the Panthers (12-8) to the NE10 Championship.
Freshman goalie Mirthe Karstens kept the Cats in the game thanks to her stellar performance in the cage by capturing six saves in the game.
Adelphi will look to capture its first ever Northeast-10 Championship as they take on #7 Pace for the NE10 Championship on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on Motamed Field. The two teams last faced each other on Nov. 9 when Pace defeated the Panthers 5-2.
Tickets will be sold for the championship game at $10 for adults, and $5 for seniors/children, and free admission will be granted for all students.
