Charleston, W. Va. - The No. 2 seed University of Charleston turned up the heat on the No. 10 seed Adelphi University men's soccer team Saturday, handing the Panthers a 4-0 defeat in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Division II Championship at the Welch Athletic Complex.
The No. 6 nationally-ranked Golden Eagles (19-1) outshot the Panthers by a daunting 26-1 count in the contest.
Adelphi, which made the tournament field as the last bid in Super Region I, closes out its 2022 campaign at 9-5-6 overall.
In his final start of the season,Â
Daniel De La Heras stopped a career-high twelve shots. Until today, the Madrid native had yet to have a game of 10 saves or more in his career.
Charleston controlled play from the opening whistle and kept the pressure on the Panthers all afternoon.
Less than four minutes into the match, the Golden Eagles dispossessed Adelphi in the visitors' own half and turned the giveaway into a 3-v-2 for the first goal of the game.
Adelphi kept the deficit at a single goal for much of the first half, until Charleston buried another in the 33rd minute off a set piece to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
