Worcester, Mass. - With the long-awaited NE10 Championship re-match ahead, the Adelphi University women's tennis team defeated Assumption University by a 7-0 final on Sunday at the Assumption Tennis Courts in Worcester.
Heading into Tuesday's regular-season finale at Franklin Pierce, the Panthers stand at 7-3 overall and 6-2 against NE10 opposition.
A win in Tuesday's 11 a.m. match at Franklin Pierce would put Adelphi in position to possibly earn a first-round bye in the NE10 Tournament.
After a forfeit at No. 3 doubles got Adelphi out to an advantageous start,
Sanne Selmer Gilje and
Amanda Franstedt officially clinched the doubles point with a 6-0 victory at the top flight.
Selmer Gilje also registered her first 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 1 singles, while Franstedt earned a 6-4, 6-0 result out of the No. 3 spot.
Caterina Federici played a third-set tiebreaker and prevailed to the tune of a 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 scoreline.
Julia Kielan and
Jenelle Downer each won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
The Panthers will travel back to the site of last year's NE10 final, facing defending league champion Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H.
