Rindge, N.H. - The regular season came to a finish for the Adelphi University women's tennis team Tuesday in a tough-luck 4-3 loss to Franklin Pierce University in a re-match of last year's NE10 Championship in Rindge.
In a similar fashion to last year's NE10 Tournament final, the Panthers (7-4, 6-3 NE10) took the doubles point off the Ravens (8-1, 7-1 NE10).
The teams split first and third doubles, before Adelphi's No. 2 pairing of
Sanne Selmer Gilje and
Caterina Federici won 7-5 in thrilling fashion to get the Panthers out to the early lead.
Selmer Gilje further expanded the visitors' lead with a 6-2, 7-5 decision to start off singles play, at the No. 1 flight.
Franklin Pierce then spewed off three consecutive victories, until
Carolina Chaves broke that streak with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles that leveled the match at 3-all.
It boiled down to No. 5 singles, where -- in a hard-fought contest --
Julia Kielan fell 6-4, 7-5 to Zoe Asterio Correa in the decisive match.
While the last of NE10 regular-season competition still plays out through the week,
Sanne Selmer Gilje now travels to Rome, Ga. for the ITA Cup this weekend (Oct. 13-16), following her singles victory at ITA Regionals last month.
